Civic Infrastructure Collaborative and the Chicago Architecture Center partnered on an Industry Council Event: The Future is Adaptive Reuse

In the face of major disruptors, from climate impacts to emerging technology to socioeconomic and cultural shifts, design forward cities must ask existing buildings and infrastructure to accept different roles in urban life. How are new needs and design opportunities changing the rulebook for adaptive reuse?

On January 26, 2022, Civic Infrastructure Collaborative partnered with the Chicago Architecture Center to explore the ‘new rules’ for adaptive reuse as cities evolve to embrace technology, inclusion, and emerging sources of public and private value. The 75-minute program included multiple case studies plus a primer on technical considerations.

The virtual lunchtime event included discussion of evolving urban landscapes, with inspiring examples from parking garage retrofits to co-living communities, and the real-world considerations shaping these new products.

Panelists included:

  • Lynn Osmond, Chicago Architecture Center
  • Jamie Ponce, Civic Infrastructure Collaborative (Moderator)
  • Andrew Ahitow, CityPads
  • Daniel Gensch, Shelden Architecture
  • Issac Riggs, Millennium Garages
  • Robert James, UL
